I go in with the "a lot of hard work" , if they start pressing and the situation allows to me to tell them a price without coming across arrogant, i will if they dont take the first answer.
i like to use the "sell drugs" too when asked what i do

Price is open information, it is all over autotrader.com and car.com. However, I feel reluctant to tell a stranger that though. Because, usually the reaction I receive after disclosing the price to them is "WOW, that s so much money!" I just reply: "yeah it is a lot of money for a car" quickly walk away.
