Matte Finish Keeps Getting More Popular on Huracans

Matte Finish Keeps Getting More Popular on Huracans
We've been noticing how matte finishes continue to increase in popularity. We normally do these finishes with matte PPF, whether it's on gloss paint to make them matte or on factory matte/satin paint. A lot of people still don’t know about it though. Yeah, even in these circles. It's not all paint and not all wraps. Meaning, the matte finish isn't simply achieved with paint or with matte vinyl wrap. Achieving that look with paint protection film is still one of the best (it not the best) way of doing it.

Regardless, it’s to be expected that gloss will always remain more popular. First of all, matte paint protection film is more expensive. Cleaning it, waxing or coating it requires a different approach — specially if you want to control the amount of sheen you add to the film when you coat it. On top of that, matte is simply a bit harder to keep clean and has a shorter lifespan than gloss.

That all said, the use of matte paint protection film has gotten more and more popular… specially on Lamborghinis. That’s because the unique look is really suitable for non-daily drivers. A lot of the problems associated to matte or satin clear paint protection film are amplified on daily drivers. That’s not the case for weekend cars or point-A to point-A cars.

First, even if you think you know everything there is to know about paint protection film, you should read an article that compares the differences and the pros and cons between Gloss Clear Bra and Matte Clear Bra

In the last few months we’ve installed matte paint protection film in the form of Xpel Stealth on a bunch of Huracans. In particular, we have 3 Huracan Performantes. We’d like to share those with you here. Check them out:

These are all cell phone pics. Sorry about that. We can’t always drag Ted 7 to the shop every time we do a cool car

What’s the most popular colours for matte? Grey and black? I’ve rarely seen a matte car in person but I think the bright and pastel colours in matte are by far the most eye catching. And no doubt a nightmare to keep clean as you say lol

Well, there are matte car wraps in just about any color you can imagine. However, these are actually clear matte PPF (paint protection film - Xpel Stealth) vinyl over the factory color. So essentially, making the factory color matte. We've done a few matte paint Huracans with matte film to keep the factory look as well.

That all said, some of the more popular colors are matte black and matte grey as you said... but also matte purple (thanks to the Vosteiner Huracan), yellow, orange and... I think that's pretty much it, although I believe we've also some a few matte blues and whites.

It's a lot easier to keep matte PPF clean than it its to keep wrap vinyl clean. Even more if it's coated with a ceramic coating.

Most of these cars are wiped down after every drive. It's the dailies that sit with dirt on it for days that are a real problem to keep clean.

Personally I think going matte via wrap is a cop out. Pretty easy to tell it from the real thing. Just my 2¢.

Hi! That's actually the stock red Performante color (Rosso Mars) with Xpel Stealth on top. Looks a bit orangy in the photo. But that's just the lighting I'm sure. It's a cell phone photo after all. Ted 7 wasn't around that day

I'll see if we shot it and gather some photos. We have quite a couple of Performantes go through the shop in the last few weeks so I'm sure we would've done a pro-shoot on at least one of them.

Well, yeah, sort of. I mean, you can tell the difference if you know what you're looking for... and that's fine of course. However, the real benefit of the wrap is not that it matches perfectly against real matte paint. It's that matte paint is soooooo fragile and easily damaged that getting a similar look with matte clear PPF is totally worth it.

We have plenty of clients that wrap matte Xpel over matte paint. Does the matte paint look better? Maybe. Some would say, "absolutely"... the problem is that if you actually drive the car, it doesn't look better for very long. We've had a number of matte paint Lamborghinis come through here with no protection and just a few hundred miles on the clock and you can pick out those rock chips even more than on gloss paint.
